How many lives could be saved if sexually active gay men were allowed to donate blood?

This subject has become more visible to the national press since Hurricane Harvey destroyed many parts of Houston in August. Since 1983, the US blood supply has been “gay free” by eliminating those men who have sex with men from giving blood. This was done to protect the blood supply from AIDS, but with the advancements in testing blood, it seems like it’s time for a change.
