Pride in Lubbock, Texas

LubbockPRIDE is set to host its seventh annual Lubbock LGBT Pride Festival from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday at Maxey Park at 30th Street and Nashville Avenue. There will be 56 vendors selling goods, as well as handing out educational information and resources. There will also be food, live music, games, a kid’s art center, entertainment and a finale drag show to finish the night.

Pride in Austin.

While most of the world celebrates LGBT pride in June, Austin celebrates it in August. The Austin Gay and Lesbian Pride Foundation (AGLPF) hosts Austin PRIDE for a week in August, culminating in a huge parade and celebration, which falls on Aug. 26 this year. Fighting back against State attacks in Texas.

Stephanie Martinez is no longer proud to be a Texan. In July, shortly after state lawmakers reconvened for their special session, the local activist was kidnapped, beaten, and robbed. After several weeks of talking to a man who contacted her online to learn more about trans issues, the two had decided to meet and discuss the topic over lunch. Martinez said she frequently meets with people to help educate them about the community; this time felt no different.

The KKK is calling for violence against gays.

The Klu Klux Klan (KKK) seemingly emboldened by the recent protest in Charlottesville and the back and forth support of President Trump, continue to take their cause to the next level by leaving flyers in the driveways of Louisiana homes. The flyers are a call to action to cause harm against gays, they read, “Stop AIDS: Support Gay Bashing,” and are signed by “Loyal White Knights of the KKK.”

Gay hero Gloria Estefan to be honored at National LGBTQ Task Force Gala.

Two weeks after learning she would be a 2017 recipient of a Kennedy Center honor in December, pop star Gloria Estefan will be honored in October at the 2017 National LGBTQ Task Force Gala. Estefan, the task force said, earned the National Leadership Award for her work to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people.

Policy on transgender troops now more than just a tweet.

A month after he announced a ban on transgender people serving in the military via Twitter, Donald Trump has issued a memo on how the decision is to be implemented. The two-and-a-half-page note says Defense Secretary Jim Mattis must consider a service member’s ‘deployability’ when deciding whether to eject them from the military. That means that if they are unable to serve in a war zone, take part in training or serve on a ship for months, they must go, the Wall Street Journal reported. It has not been spelled out exactly how the criteria will be assessed, however the Trump administration seems to be implying that it does not believe transgender service people are deployable.
