Andy Post spent his summer interviewing more than 100 LGBTQ seniors and advocates, helping to create the framework for Capitol Hill Housing’s latest development project. CHH is planning to construct a seven-story LGBTQ-affirming senior housing complex in the parking lot next to its Helen V Apartments at 14th Avenue and East Union Street.
LGBT travel is no longer “alternative.” Over 75 leading destinations and most major hotel chains actively market to the LGBT community. LGBT tourism and hospitality represents about 10% of the U.S. travel industry but is still often overlooked by travel suppliers. LGBTs travel far more often and spend more per trip and per year than their general market counterparts.
Since Ohio Rep. Nickie Antonio has been in office, she has fought to have Ohio’s civil rights protections to include LGBTQ people. Six tries have been unsuccessful. “In the past, they have just been left to languish in committee,” she said of previous bills seeking to have the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning or queer community included in nondiscrimination laws.
The University of Tennessee Knoxville is using private funds to invest in its LGBT pride center following last year’s decision by state lawmakers to strip state dollars from the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, including the pride center.
The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has chosen Tampa to host its 2019 convention. While Philadelphia will be hosting next year’s NGLCC convention, Tampa will be the location for the 2019 event, which is estimated to have an economic impact of $2.1 million. Some 2,450 hotel rooms are expected to be booked, including 700 on the peak night.
The Stonewall Parade in Wilton Manors, a town of about 12,000 residents and 100 city employees, generates an overall economic impact of more than $2 million. “We’re proud to host this one-of-a-kind annual parade and festival commemorating one of the most impactful events in LGBT history each year,” said Mayor Gary Resnick.
Some more anti-Facebook LGBTQ outrage erupted late last week when the GLBT Historical Society had a totally safe-for-work, entirely tame ad they wanted to post seeking volunteers for their booth at this weekend’s Folsom Street Fair rejected by Facebook as violating their advertising policies.
