A march to honor the 35 years of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis organization.

Staff and supporters of Gay Men’s Health Crisis will march through the streets of Manhattan on Wednesday to commemorate more than 35 years since the organization’s inception. The group, which spearheaded the fight against HIV and AIDS when they say few would even pay attention, will walk to the New York City AIDS Memorial in Greenwich Village near the shuttered St. Vincent’s Hospital.

In “Elders React to In a Heartbeat” a group of older individuals watch and react to the short animated film, “In a Heartbeat.”  In the film, created by Beth David and Esteban Bravo, a boy “runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams.”

After a lifetime of guilt and secret longings, David Morrison came out as gay at age 76. He and his wife, Margaret, had raised a family together. “I loved my wife. I’d have laid down my life for her. But it was not a soul relationship, you know?” he says, adding, “But what marriage is perfect”?

LGBT senior summit in Iowa.

One Iowa, the state’s leading lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) advocacy organization, will host its 3rd Annual LGBTQ Senior Summit on Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Grand View University Student Center. The summit runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A conversation for aging LGBT community

Aging is something everyone faces, and the LGBTQ community is no exception. They do, however, face challenges that others may not be aware of. A community conversation is being held at the Golden Circle on August 15th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. to discuss the obstacles that the LGBTQ community faces as they reach an age where they need in-home health care or assisted living accomodations.

Growing up in southern Florida, and spending much of his young adult years in Orlando, Larry Burlew, Ph.D., always intended to spend his retirement years in the Sunshine State. In 2009, he bought a condominium in Daytona Beach for that very purpose.
