Half of all transgender people have attempted suicide.

As disgusting, hurtful and plain false messages about the LGBTQ community abound in the lead-up to a marriage equality postal survey, sobering new research has found young transgender people are at massively increased risk of suicide or depression compared to the general population. A study of 859 people by Telethon Kids Institute, hailed as “the largest ever survey conducted into the mental health of trans young people in Australia”, found almost half had attempted suicide in their life.

New Jersey to host first LGBT healthcare conference.

New Jersey’s first Healthcare Conference for the LGBT Community will be held on October 6, 2017. The conference is supported through a grant from Sanofi. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, a facility of RWJBarnabas Health, and Garden State Equality will host the day at Raritan Valley Country Club, 747 State Route 28, Bridgewater from 8 am to 3 pm.

Gay & bisexual European immigrants face higher risk to HIV.

Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) often are motivated to embark on new lives in supportive countries to escape oppression and experience freedoms unavailable in their home countries. However, a recent study addressing the MSM migrant community shows that structural stigma (e.g., laws and policies promoting the unequal treatment of oppressed populations) may put this intersectional population at a higher risk of HIV exposure.

Why is the LGBT community less healthy than their straight counterparts?

There’s a health trend that researchers want the LGBT community to be aware of: Lesbian and gay adults over 50 are found to be in poorer health than heterosexuals, according to a University of Washington School of Social Work study. The UW study is the first to use national, population-based data, to look at adult health by sexual orientation. UW Professor Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen was a lead researcher.

A high rate depression among LGB young people.

Adolescence can be tough for young people, but it can be especially hard for teenagers who aren’t straight. Our latest study reveals that lesbian, gay and bisexual young people (LGB or “sexual minority youth”) have about three times the risk of being depressed compared with their heterosexual peers.

AIDS healthcare coming to Orlando with new clinic.

he AIDS Healthcare Foundation has opened its first clinic in Central Florida, bringing another source of testing and care to the area, particularly for people with little or no health insurance. Local officials, including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and City Council Commissioner Patty Sheehan, celebrated the clinic’s opening at a recent event and emphasized the region’s need for more HIV education and services.

Transgender mental health helpline goes nationwide in the UK.

The UK’s first mental health helpline offering emotional support and information to people who identify as transgender, non-binary or gender-fluid has been rolled out nationwide, with project leaders confident the pioneering scheme will become a permanent fixture as of early 2018. Mindline Trans+, co-run by local mental health charities Bristol Mind and Mind in Taunton and West Somerset, was expanded throughout the UK on August 1 after a successful six-month local pilot in southwest England.
