“This is historic, so close to the Russian border and still it feels safe,” says Valentina Likoshva, LGBT activist from Murmansk. She was one of about 50 people from Russia, Belarus and Kazhakstan who joined the first ever pride parade in Kirkenes, Norway’s border town to Russia in the north.
Just a few months ago, it was unclear if there would be a Pride event in Humboldt County this year. Within months of last year’s event, Humboldt Pride, the nonprofit that organized the event, dissolved. Operations ceased Nov. 30.
Some 200 people attended an LGBT pride parade in Montenegro on September 23 calling for more rights and tougher punishment for violent acts against gay people in the small Balkan nation.
Since 1999, September 23 has been Celebrate Bisexuality Day, also known as Bi Visibility Day. It was created to celebrate the bisexual community. Bisexuality means that a person is romantically or sexually attracted to a person of any gender.
The Stonewall Parade in Wilton Manors, a town of about 12,000 residents and 100 city employees, generates an overall economic impact of more than $2 million. “We’re proud to host this one-of-a-kind annual parade and festival commemorating one of the most impactful events in LGBT history each year,” said Mayor Gary Resnick.
Some more anti-Facebook LGBTQ outrage erupted late last week when the GLBT Historical Society had a totally safe-for-work, entirely tame ad they wanted to post seeking volunteers for their booth at this weekend’s Folsom Street Fair rejected by Facebook as violating their advertising policies.
As the summer comes to an end, so does a time of nearly non-stop LGBT Pride events and parties around the world. Seriously, there’s been a few each weekend ever since June’s Pride Month. While revelers clean off the glitter after recent celebrations in Montreal, Manchester, and New Orleans, others ready for more festivities sine the party is never quite over when it comes to celebrating the community, the accomplishments made, and to simply have a good time.
