Soccer teams Manchester United and Arsenal are among groups supporting a new campaign in Britain timed to coincide with a report showing an increase in hate crimes against LGBT people. The rights group Stonewall started its Come Out for LGBT campaign as part of a public awareness effort aimed to mobilize allies and show that LGBT people still face hatred.

Southern states need their own rules for the transgender population.

Nashville medical providers say southern states need help figuring out how to care for transgender people. Panelists from Middle Tennessee addressed a transgender health conference in Philadelphia this weekend. There is the complicated issue of cultural acceptance in conservative parts of the country. But Vanderbilt-trained neuroscientist Kale Edmiston, who is a transgender person, says the more basic issue is access to specialists.

STD testing at LGBTQ health center show dramatic statistics.

A Chicago LGBTQ health center dramatically increased STD screening over 5 years, but many of its patients are still disproportionately burdened by STDs, according to a recent epidemiology report. In the report, researchers assessed the extent and results of testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia from 2012 to 2016 at Howard Brown Health — the largest LGBTQ health center in the Midwest.

Irma leaves gay softball players stranded in Portland.

Three Portland hotels have offered to extend discounted rates for Gay Softball World Series players as Hurricane Irma makes its way to Florida, and a few Florida teams are stranded in Portland, unable to go home. Oxford Suites, Doubletree, and Red Lion Jantzen Beach are all discounting rates another 10 percent on top of the contact rate. Some Florida teams have already left the Rose City, but those remaining are stranded for several days.

While it was the nation’s highest court that granted marriage equality to LGBTQ Americans two years ago, the news out of Washington these days isn’t so rosy. With social conservatives like Mike Pence and Jeff Sessions in top roles, many LGBTQ funders have been continuing the fight in places away from the capital. In fact, well before Trump’s election threw up obstacles to gains at the federal level, these funders were focusing new attention and resources at the state and local level, especially in conservative parts of the country where discrimination against LGBTQ people is both legal and common.
