5 THINGS TO KNOW

Piers Morgan attacks gay conversion preacher.

A doctor who claims he was ‘cured’ of homosexuality and can help other people become straight was slammed by Piers Morgan today in a heated TV debate. Dr Mike Davidson claims to have been turned away from homosexuality by prayer, counselling and psychotherapy – and has been married to his wife for 35 years.

SPORTS

Pro-sports embracing the LGBT community…for ticket sales.

For decades the LGBT community has viewed the sports world as the enemy. Sports represented teasing in the high school locker room, gay slurs from Little League coaches and a machismo that flew against some corners of our community. That began to change in certain circles in the late Seventies and early Eighties. As local gay sports leagues popped up, and events like the Gay Games held their inaugural festivities, LGBT people, and in particular gay men, started on a journey of claiming sports for themselves.

5 THINGS TO KNOW

“Gay Wedding Cake” case set for Supreme Court.

Jim Obergefell sat in the Supreme Court on a June morning more than two years ago and listened as Justice Anthony Kennedy read an opinion that would re-shape the lives of LGBT Americans by clearing the way for same-sex marriage nationwide. “They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right,” Kennedy wrote in the opinion.

HEALTH

Elite women’s colleges welcome transgender students.

Until last year, Ninotska Love would have been barred from attending Wellesley College. She’s an accomplished student who has persevered through hardship, but under longstanding rules, the college would have rejected her because she was assigned at birth as a boy. Now the rules have changed. This week, Love will become one of the first transgender women to attend Wellesley in the school’s 147-year history.

POLICIES

Gay marriage debate in Australia gets ugly.

Australia’s debate over whether to legalise same-sex marriage has become increasingly bitter, with accusations of bullying and calls for a doctor to be deregistered after she rallied against legalising same-sex marriage. As the federal government pressed ahead with plans for a controversial national plebiscite, Dr Pansy Lai, a Chinese-born paediatrician in Sydney, found herself at the centre of the debate after appearing in a television advertisement for the “no” campaign.

OPINIONS

Pope Francis supports civil unions for same-sex couples.

Pope Francis has endorsed civil unions between same-sex couples for the first time since becoming pontiff in 2013. In the book Politics and Society, which consists of 12 printed conversations between the pope and French sociologist Dominique Wolton, he discussed his feelings on marriage equality and explained that he prefers using a different term to describe the union of gay people.

5 THINGS TO KNOW

5 points to wipe transgender people from America.

Two years ago, the Family Research Council (FRC), an Evangelical Christian anti-LGBT hate group according to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), published a road map laying out a plan to morally legislate the transgender community in the US out of existence. I wrote about the danger posed by this plan in January of 2016 in an article titled “And Then They Came for Transgender People,” deliberately echoing the words of Martin Niemöller.
