The modern-day gay civil rights movement had its beginnings in the Stonewall riots of 1969. Police raided the popular gay bar, the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village section of New York City on June 28, 1969. Violence and protests erupted in the streets and lasted for six days.i
