California’s new Senate leader will be the first woman and lesbian to hold the position. San Diego Sen. Toni Atkins (D), a former Assembly speaker, will take the role held by Senate president pro tem Kevin De Leon, The Associated Press reported. Atkins said she will be focusing “internally.”
