After the sun sets over the Las Vegas Valley and the temperature eases from stifling to merely sweaty, the Flamingo Beach Club turns up the music. A flock of pink flamingo and unicorn pool floats takes to the waters, and crowds of well-groomed guys follow, stripped down to their nighttime splash bash best.

When Gilbert Baker designed the rainbow flag in 1978, he did so to create a symbol and an icon for the LGTB community. A symbol, recognisable across the world, that people could use to express their pride. Unfortunately, 40 years later, there are still countries in which homosexuality is persecuted, sometimes even by jail sentences, and in which the rainbow flag is forbidden. Pride in London organisers have apologised after anti-trans protesters “forced their way to the front of the parade”. Members of lesbian and feminist group Get The L Out demanded to march behind the rainbow flag, which marks the start of the event, organisers said.
