Southern Decadence, the “Gay Mardi Gras” kicks off on Labor Day in New Orleans.

Southern Decadence, the gigantic annual LGBT gathering sometimes called “Gay Mardi Gras,” is expected to fill up the French Quarter as usual from Aug. 31 to Labor Day (Sept. 4). Jeffrey Palmquist, a former Southern Decadence grand marshal, said no one’s quite sure how many people attend the weekend of partying and parading, “but 250,000 wouldn’t be out of the ballpark.”

Millennials, the gayest generation?

I’ve seen it in everything from clickbait articles on The Daily Beast to research from the very reputable Williams Institute out of UCLA: The numbers are in, and millennials (identified by Gallup as those born between 1980 and 1998) are the “gayest generation.” The honor comes from a whole host of self-identifying polls and surveys that have shown high percentages of millennials who identify somewhere on the queer spectrum.

Jenny Jones Show gay admirer killer released.

A Michigan man convicted in the 1995 murder of another man who expressed romantic interest in him on national television has been released from prison. Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz says in an email that 47-year-old Jonathan Schmitz was released on Tuesday from a prison facility in Jackson.

Pride flag still the center of attention at Alabama high school.

A group of students and parents are sharply divided over an Alabama high school’s display of a rainbow flag to promote extracurricular activities. Over 270 supporters have signed an Aug. 18 petition requesting that a rainbow flag displayed at Auburn High School in Auburn, Alabama be removed. The flag was created by the school’s EDUCATE club, which promotes diversity, and appeared last week at a fair for extracurricular groups and activities, local NBC affiliate WSFA reported.

Meet the first out LGBT coach in the NFL.

San Francisco 49ers assistant coach Katie Sowers is a pro football pioneer. This season, she will become the NFL’s second full-time assistant female coach. She will also become the league’s first openly LGBT coach, male or female. “No matter what you do in life, one of the most important things is to be true to who you are,” Sowers, openly lesbian, told Outsports when asked why she is discussing her sexual orientation publicly for the first time.
