This year’s Burning Man — the wild, weeklong, annual festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert — will start on August 27. Tens of thousands of people are expected to venture to the desert and follow a 31-year tradition of creating a temporary city, making art, throwing nonstop parties, and burning “the man” (a 100-foot flammable structure that resembles a stick figure).
“Moonlight.” “The Handmaiden.” “Carol.” The last few years have not only brought LGBTQ films and stories further into the mainstream, but queer films have dominated awards seasons and found commercial success. This has been a long time coming: The New Queer Cinema was a major influence on the indie film boom of the ’90s, and set the bar high for the many queer films to follow.
After a gunman killed 49 people and wounded dozens of others at Pulse nightclub in Orlando last year, Rev. James Martin heard many of his fellow Catholic clergy members offer condolences. But what struck him most was what he didn’t hear. Two weeks after learning she would be a 2017 recipient of a Kennedy Center honor in December, pop star Gloria Estefan will be honored in October at the 2017 National LGBTQ Task Force Gala. Estefan, the task force said, earned the National Leadership Award for her work to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, often referred to as Peter Tchaikovsky, is among Russia’s greatest cultural exports. He composed Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty, arguably the world’s greatest ballets, which sell-out theatres to this day.
