The University of Tennessee Knoxville is using private funds to invest in its LGBT pride center following last year’s decision by state lawmakers to strip state dollars from the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, including the pride center.
The National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has chosen Tampa to host its 2019 convention. While Philadelphia will be hosting next year’s NGLCC convention, Tampa will be the location for the 2019 event, which is estimated to have an economic impact of $2.1 million. Some 2,450 hotel rooms are expected to be booked, including 700 on the peak night.
The Stonewall Parade in Wilton Manors, a town of about 12,000 residents and 100 city employees, generates an overall economic impact of more than $2 million. “We’re proud to host this one-of-a-kind annual parade and festival commemorating one of the most impactful events in LGBT history each year,” said Mayor Gary Resnick.
Some more anti-Facebook LGBTQ outrage erupted late last week when the GLBT Historical Society had a totally safe-for-work, entirely tame ad they wanted to post seeking volunteers for their booth at this weekend’s Folsom Street Fair rejected by Facebook as violating their advertising policies.
The pasta company Barilla is opening a restaurant on the campus of the University of Southern California – and there hasn’t been a backlash from the LGBT community. Why not? The school finished work on its $700 million “USC Village,” a commercial area open to the public during the day. Many big retail chains are moving into the space, including Trader Joe’s, Target, and now Barilla.
The streets of downtown Champaign were closed off for the 8th annual C-U Pride and Parade, but it’s more than just costumes and colors. The Illinois director of tourism says LGBTQ events are a major part of tourism in the state. The streets of Champaign were flooded with people, and the colors of the rainbow.
Sponsorships for the annual CU Pride and Parade event in downtown Champaign have been growing over the years, and there’s more behind that than a good feeling for supporters. It’s also good for business, two sponsors said.
