AARP survey shows LGBT seniors have harder time finding room for them in assisted living.

In 2014, the Equal Rights Center sent New Jersey couples to seek housing in age-restricted communities, and found that in 40 percent of the tests, the same-sex couples were treated less favorably than the heterosexual couples. The LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) tester was told of fewer available apartments and additional required fees.

Majority of LGBT adults concerned about social support and discrimination in long-term care.

When it comes to aging-related concerns, older LGBT adults worry most about having adequate family and other social support to rely on as they age, discrimination in long-term care (LTC) facilities, and access to LGBT-sensitive services for seniors, according to a new AARP survey. Black and Latino LGBT adults report the greatest concern about future family and social supports, and greater worry about potential abuse in LTC facilities because of their race/ethnicity and sexual orientation/gender identity.

HRC Foundation Releases 2018 Healthcare Equality Index.

The HRC Foundation released the 11th edition of its annual Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), which scores healthcare facilities on policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of their LGBTQ patients, visitors and employees. A record 626 healthcare facilities actively participated in this year’s survey, committing to LGBTQ-inclusive policies and practices.

Seeking LGBT-inclusive hospice care? Here are some things to look for.

Discrimination against LGBT people is unacceptable in any instance. But it is particularly unforgiveable when encountered in a hospice or palliative care environment. When an LGBT person has a serious or life-limiting illness and seeks palliative care or hospice care, they run the risk of isolation and marginalization at the precise time when they most need support. LGBT family members of straight patients seeking hospice care are also vulnerable.
