Through the Mayor’s Commission on LGBT Affairs’ LGBTQ Elders Committee, the Community Legal Services paralegal is creating an Elder LGBT Long Term Care Bill of Rights to fight against discrimination older queer and trans adults face in the surrounding area.

Donald Trump’s administration has backtracked on yet another LGBT rights measure. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, last week withdrew a proposed rule put forth in December 2014 to assure that same-sex spouses are treated equally to opposite-sex ones in long-term care facilities that receive Medicare and Medicaid funds, which most do.

California Governor Jerry Brown on Wednesday signed a bill that creates a “bill of rights” for LGBT seniors in long-term care. Senate Bill (SB) 219, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and sponsored by Equality California, aims to help protect seniors from discrimination or mistreatment in long-term care facilities.

The Castro was the epicenter of gay life in America in the late 1970s, when Maupin introduced his newspaper column, Tales of the City, set in and around these streets and chronicling gay (as well as lesbian and transgender) life for a mainstream audience.

The public is invited to view a documentary highlighting the challenges older LGBT people face. The Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging, AARP CT and Gay Heritage will sponsor the free luncheon, panel discussion and film showing at noon Wednesday at the Heritage Village Activities Building.
