LGBT senior housing coming to Seattle.

Andy Post spent his summer interviewing more than 100 LGBTQ seniors and advocates, helping to create the framework for Capitol Hill Housing’s latest development project. CHH is planning to construct a seven-story LGBTQ-affirming senior housing complex in the parking lot next to its Helen V Apartments at 14th Avenue and East Union Street.

Building an LGBT community in a nursing home.

“I feel like a petunia in an onion patch,” Douglas* says one day during a visit. Douglas lives in a single bedroom covered in pictures and memorabilia in a nursing home. “Do you think there are any other gay residents here? I mean, there have to be, right? But I’ve never met any.” He says he’s not sure who he can share his sexual identity with, because he’s not sure who will and won’t accept him.

Albany County supports veterans who were denied benefits.

When it comes to discharged LGBT veterans in Albany County, they don’t have to worry about being denied benefits due to their sexual orientation. County lawmakers on Monday passed a law that will ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender veterans who were discharged under the federal government’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell police started under President Bill Clinton to receive county-level veteran’s benefits.

Webinar for the LGBT community about colorectal cancer.

LGBT Healthlink, a program of CenterLink, will present two webinars during September focusing on colorectal cancer and tobacco cessation for the LGBTQ community. On Sept. 19, 1 p.m., Colorectal Cancer in LGBT Communities will take place. This webinar will discuss colorectal cancer in LGBTQ communities, health systems interventions to reduce high rates of incidence and mortality among the LGBTQ population, the 80 percent by 2018 campaign to increase screening and best practices for LGBTQ engagement.

The program created by Dr. Laura Kelly has been a part of the University’s Social Work and Nursing schools for many years.

A tweet about gay culture with a heartbreaking twist has gone viral for the best reason. The tweet, which was only written yesterday but has since been retweeted nearly 30,000 times was written by a man from the US. “Gay culture is being a teenager when you’re 30 because your teenage years were not yours to live,” he wrote.

Health challenges for older gay and lesbians.

The study is the first to use national, population-based data to evaluate differences in health outcomes and behaviors among lesbian, gay and bisexual older adults. Using two-year survey data of 33,000 heterosexual and LGB adults ages 50 and older from a probability-based study of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers from the UW School of Social Work report noticeable health disparities between LGB and heterosexual adults.
