Health challenges for older gay and lesbians.

The study is the first to use national, population-based data to evaluate differences in health outcomes and behaviors among lesbian, gay and bisexual older adults. Using two-year survey data of 33,000 heterosexual and LGB adults ages 50 and older from a probability-based study of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers from the UW School of Social Work report noticeable health disparities between LGB and heterosexual adults.

Southern Decadence kicks off in New Orleans.

Equal parts festival, parade, free concert and circuit party, Southern Decadence is New Orleans’ biggest LGBTQ event — and it’s getting bigger. This year, organizers expect the celebration to attract a record-breaking 250,000 people to the French Quarter during Labor Day weekend (Thursday, Aug. 31 to Monday, Sept. 4).

Half of all transgender people have attempted suicide.

As disgusting, hurtful and plain false messages about the LGBTQ community abound in the lead-up to a marriage equality postal survey, sobering new research has found young transgender people are at massively increased risk of suicide or depression compared to the general population. A study of 859 people by Telethon Kids Institute, hailed as “the largest ever survey conducted into the mental health of trans young people in Australia”, found almost half had attempted suicide in their life.

Scottish gay men to receive ‘Turing Law’ pardons.

Gay men who were convicted of same-sex offences in Scotland before laws against homosexuality were dropped are to receive full pardons. The BBC understands the Scottish government will announce a new bill next week. If approved in parliament it would mean that all convicted gay men in Scotland would receive the formal pardon.

New Jersey to host first LGBT healthcare conference.

New Jersey’s first Healthcare Conference for the LGBT Community will be held on October 6, 2017. The conference is supported through a grant from Sanofi. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, a facility of RWJBarnabas Health, and Garden State Equality will host the day at Raritan Valley Country Club, 747 State Route 28, Bridgewater from 8 am to 3 pm.

LGBT friendly affordable housing coming to Long Island.

In the metropolis that helped give rise to the modern gay rights movement, a new housing project is building homes for its aging members. The LGBT Network showed off plans for a 75-unit affordable housing apartment complex that embraces lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) residents, the first development of its kind in Long Island, New York. The Islip Town Board is expected to vote on the development this fall.
