The attorney general’s new ‘Religious Liberty Task Force’ will ensure that the Trump administration’s program of discrimination against LGBT people and others continues unchecked. Sadly it is no exaggeration, no hyperbole, to say that Attorney General Jeff Sessions declared a holy war on LGBT people, LGBT equality, and LGBT rights on Monday.
The idea that gay people can be ‘cured’ is nonsense, but boy is it persistent nonsense. Despite the best efforts of experts, campaigners and lawmakers, faith-based groups that believe it’s possible to ‘convert’ gay people into heterosexuals continue to operate on the fringes of society.
It was a controversial yet common refrain about suicide, Mormons and LGBT people in Utah, this time from daytime TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. “The leading cause of death for Utah kids, ages 11-17, is suicide,” she said during an episode that aired last month. “Suicide in Utah has increased 141 percent because of the shame they feel from the Mormon Church.”
There are many things one could say of the Fox News Channel — that it has a reliably conservative bent and that it’s Donald Trump’s favorite news source, for instance. But now a right-wing pundit — who is himself gay — is claiming it’s become too pro-LGBT.
