EU countries roundly condemned a witch hunt against gay people in the Russian republic of Chechnya earlier this year, but only a few governments are willing to help those fleeing persecution. According to the Russian LGBT network, an NGO that has been hiding over 60 gay Chechens at secret locations in central Russia, it briefed almost 20 EU countries on the situation in April.
While the Trump Administration has failed spectacularly in “repealing” or “replacing” the Affordable Care Act, has been embroiled in personnel roulette, and can’t shake the dark cloud of allegations of collusion with Russia to influence the election, it may have been easy to miss the relentless anti-LGBTQ agenda that this Administration is pursuing.
Today, the Trevor Project — the nation’s largest LGBTQ youth crisis intervention & suicide prevention organization — reported a dramatic spike in calls, text messages and online chats overall, and most specifically from transgender youth following President Trump’s tweet regarding transgender military service members and the announcement of the “bathroom bill” in the Texas legislature.
Americans oppose the President’s position on transgender individuals in the military. In the latest Economist/YouGov Poll, adults nationwide favor transgender troops serving openly and disapprove of the President’s announcement that the he would not “accept or allow” transgender troops – and they especially dislike his decision to make this announcement on Twitter.
A federal judge, sweeping aside objections from the Justice Department, has ordered the FBI to conduct a new search for decades-old documents about a U.S. government program to purge the federal workforce of gays and lesbians, including records on the role of a future chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in implementing the Cold War-era crackdown.
Last week, President Trump announced via Twitter that, after “consultation with my Generals and military experts,” the “United States Government will not accept or allow Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.”
As military services await guidance following President Donald Trump’s announcement last week via Twitter of a ban on transgender service members, the commandant of the Coast Guard is speaking out, saying he has no intention of leaving transgender Coast Guardsmen out in the cold.
