Gay Olympian Ian Thorpe weighs in on the Australian gay marriage debate.

SWIMMING great Ian Thorpe has had a spray at Canberra politicians berating them for not “doing their job” when it comes to same-sex marriage. The Olympian, who came out as gay in 2014, told news.com.au he feared a “heated” debate in the run up to a postal plebiscite could see some young people struggling with their sexuality pushed further into the closet. On Sunday, Thorpe threw his weight behind the campaign for a yes vote for same-sex marriage. Joined by his partner Ryan Channing, he headed down to Sydney’s City2Surf fun run to encourage people to ensure their details were current on the electoral roll.

Several large men milled around the door at 4020 Schiff Drive in an innocuous strip mall in the Chinatown district of this gambling mecca, watching over empty parking spaces in front reserved for the boss’ gleaming white Rolls Royce. This week elite-level cyclist Jillian Bearden will ride in the inaugural Colorado Classic as the first out transgender woman to compete in a race at this level. A bike racer since 2007, Bearden helped shape the recent USA Cycling policy on transgender athlete participation with performance data from before and after her transition in 2014.

More pressure on Texas, but now from the NHL.

The NHL became the first major professional sports league to publicly oppose an anti-LGBTQ bill currently making its way through the Texas Legislature, joining the Dallas Stars in opposition, per Sportsnet’s Mark Spector. The league also said it will “reassess” hosting the 2018 NHL Draft in Dallas if the bill passes.

Ex NFL & gay – “Life is great now!”

Inside Ryan O’Callaghan’s home, the only evidence that he played in the NFL is an action photo of him lined up at offensive tackle for the New England Patriots as quarterback Tom Brady prepared to take the snap. The photo sits on a shelf above a lamp shaped in the form of men’s buttocks. With a couple of visitors in tow, O’Callaghan patted the lamp and, with a hint of mischief, watched it change colors.

Fearless as a gay footie referee.

Referee Ryan Atkin has spoken to Sky Sports about his life and experiences as a gay man working in football, making him the sport’s first publicly ‘out’ professional official in the UK. The 32-year-old says his decision to share his story – described as “an important moment” for the sport by the Football Association’s Head of Senior Referee Development, Neale Barry – has been prompted by the recent strengthening of commitments made by the game’s governing bodies to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) inclusion.
